Stølen School was one of the earliest public schools in Bergen. Houses for the working classes were built in the area at this time, and soon 30–40 people lived in each house. Today, these are one-family houses. The children at Stølen School were among the poorest in the area. The school subjects were reading, writing, mathematics and religion.

The children moved to the new, modern Krohnengen School in 1880. Subsequently a maritime school moved into Stølen School for two years. Then the fire department arrived, and stayed on until 1903, when two new fire stations were built nearby. Five firemen and a horse kept guard at Stølen fire station. The emergency vehicle was a carriage which carried fire extinguishing equipment. An addition to the main building gave room for a stable and the carriage. The building is situated in a quite high altitude in the landscape, and if an emergency call came in, the carriage would most likely avoid going up-hill.

The house subsequently served as a police station for fifty years. The prison cell is still in the basement of what is a private house today. The owner has kept the bars from the cell’s window, and the massive door leaves no doubt concerning the previous use of the room.
